Back Home

DSC_6699.jpeg

We are back and hiking the local trails. It always feels so good to be home. I can’t say enough about the beauty of the US. There is so much to see. I am adding a couple photo from Mount Rushmore, just to share.

The first photo is a Belted Kingfisher. She was hanging out on the Stillwater River. I heard her fly by our location. I told Teresa to wait, she would be back. Sure enough, she flew back to our location, then landed in this tree. Love this!!

Did I mention that we are glad to be home.

One Cool Kingfisher

DSC_2278.jpeg

As we hiked along the Stillwater River this week, I could hear a Belted Kingfisher nearby. When they get going, they seem to be playing tag. When I see them in this game mode, there is normally two or more of them.

I scanned along the rivers edge and in the trees trying to locate them. Finally, I spotted one. He was on our side of the river in a nearby tree. The problem is that he would not hold still. Suddenly, he flew to the other side of the river. I had a clear shot. I captured this photo just before he took off again.

I love how the Kingfisher looks. They are such a cool bird.

Hiding Places?

I just about missed this this Belted Kingfisher. I think this is the same one I photographed a couple weeks ago with his lunch. I have seen and heard him several times since, but today I found him in this tree. He is kind of hard to pick out of the branches, but he’s cool looking.

One Fish To-Go

Adjustments.jpeg

There was a storm this past weekend and we drove out to Big Woods to see if there was any damage. We did see a lot of down trees along the road at the East entrance.

As we drive back into the reserve, I saw this King Fisher with his lunch. I guess he survived the storm .. can’t say that for this fish.

Loud Kingfisher

FullSizeRender.jpg

This is a Belted Kingfisher. There was a pair of them, but this one was flying around and making a lot of noise. If you have ever heard one, you know what I am talking about. At fist, I thought it was upset about our presence, but within a few minutes, I saw the real threat. There was a large, Red-tailed Hawk flying around, clearly looking for dinner.

Kingfishers nest in riverbanks. They are a really cool bird, and I have photographed them many times. I could not get a photo of one that was not flying around this time. Maybe the next time.
