At Home?

It appears this Red-headed Woodpecker has made Garbry Big Woods Sanctuary his home. I am sure there is a nest nearby.

Give Me My Pole

When I arrived at Garbry Big Woods Sanctuary one day this week I saw nature at work. There was a red-winged blackbird perched on this pole. Just above him this Tree Swallow was hovering. I could not hear what was happening, but I am sure there was some squawking. The red-winged flew away and the swallow took his place. It was cool.

Perched Old Man

This Great Blue Heron was in a tree overlooking one of the ponds at Garbry Big Woods. We watched him land in this tree, then move to another tree .. and then fly away. Teresa saw him eating someing right after landing so I guess it was dine in.

A Unique Call

This was a first for us ... a Great Crested Flycatcher. You could hear him long before we were able to locate him.

Let's start over. We drove to the bike trail south of town for an early walk. As we began our hike, we heard a bird that we didn't recognize. I could tell he was in the top of the trees above us, but locating him proved to be a challenge. Then he flew away (bummer) so we continued with our hike. !

The bird activity was nuts, but they were difficult to locate in the dense spring foliage. As we walked back to our starting location we heard that unique call again. After a lot of looking for him, I spotted him, but the dude was hiding in the leaves. After what felt like hours, he jumped on a branch where I could snap a couple of photos. What a beautiful bird. A first for sure!
