We were actually hiking with a group looking for butterflies when I saw this female Northern Cardinal. She flew to a tree that was not far from where I was standing so I snapped a few photos. I love cardinals.

I almost missed this Blue jay. We had been hiking for a while and had not seen much. It is that time of year when there are fewer birds and I really was not expecting much. We had heard a jay but could not locate him. Teresa sighted this guy near the very top of this large tree.

This is a nonbreeding male American Goldfinch. They lack that bright yellow of the breeding male.
We have not seen many finches lately so I was very happy to capture this photo.

We saw several of thse Carolina Chickadees but this was the only photo I captured. Sometimes they will just not hold still for a photo.
You get a feel for the small size of the bird when you see him beside the walnut. 🤯

It has been a while since the last time I photograped a [Red-bellied Woodpecker](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red-bellied_woodpecker). I have seen a few, but neither of us has been able to get a photo. This one gave me that few extra seconds so I could capture a photo. We tend to photograph more woodpeckers in the fall and winter.
I really love watching woodpeckers hunting their lunch ... this guy found somethig yummy (seond photo).
