Temporary Housing

Near the end of our butterfly walk this week, we saw several Kingfishers near the fishing pond at Stillwater Prairie Reserve. They normally nest in the banks of rivers, but given the high water levels, perhaps they were hanging out at the pond.

They were very loud. Perhaps we annoyed them. I guess I can understand.

A Bad Feather Day

I see this most every September: a Molting Cardinal. Most years I seem to run across males that are molting, but while hiking this week we ran across this female that was clearly in the early stages. A bad feather day?

Hiding In The Shadows

DSC_1485.jpeg

I was standing on the overlook at Stillwater Prairie Reserve when I spotted this American Goldfinch hopping from flower to flower. I thought I could capture a photo so I pulled up my camera and .. hey, hold still. When I was finally able to caputre a photo, he was in the shadows. I like to think its a better photo so I have to say thank you to this cool bird.

Brave Field Sparrow

DSC_1508.jpeg

I was surprised at the brave and even bold behavior of this Field Sparrow. She allowed us to get very close. I did not even notice her watching us until I was within about 10 feet. I had to backup to capture a photo with the lens I was using.
