Big Hunter

This is the second time this year for me to capture a photo of a Dragonhunter. They are really very cool. From the link provided above:

Their long, strong wings allow them to chase fast-flying prey (they can hit about 25 mph) and their legs are equipped with stout spines so they can hang onto it. Legler, in Dragonflies of Wisconsin, says, “When feeding it perches on dirt roads waiting for other dragonflies, including darners, to fly down the road. The Dragonhunter then swoops up after the darner from behind. Or it may perch on branches high in treetops. It then swoops down on passing dragonflies and back up to the treetop to eat.” Dragonflies (sometimes even other Dragonhunters), make up a respectable proportion of their menu...

They even eat large butterflies. A real hunter.

Hearing, Identifying, Photographing

I am starting to pay more attention to how birds sound. They are so unique. It's not just about how they sound ... it's more about learning to identify birds by how they sound.

I am using this app called Merlin Bird ID by Cornell Lab. That link is to the app in the Apple App Store. I believe it can be found on the play store as well. Anyway, one of they tools he includes is that it 'listens' and then identifies birds. It's very cool

While hiking one day last week, I heard a birds that I could not identify so I used the app to identifiy it as a Carolina Wren. Knowning what you are looking for can sometimes help in finding it. Sure enough, I locate her and shot this photo.

Red-spotted Purple

I saw this beautiful Red-spotted Purple near the Stillwater River last week. The photos really does not do the colors justice, but I wanted to share them.

She’s Beautiful

I have been watching for a female Eastern Towhee for months. I finally saw one at Charleston Falls Preserve a few days ago.

Reflecting back to past photos, I think the only location where I have photographed a female Eastern towhee has been at this same preserve. Interesting.

We saw there two killdeer on a recent hike at Grand Lake St Marys. The top photo may be the best photo I have ever taken of a killdeer.
