Early Goldfinch

This was another big surprise .. our 1st sighting of an American Goldfinch for 2021. This one is a female. We did not see any males, but I am sure we will soon.

Why am I so excited? We have never photographed a Goldfinch in Feburary or March. Last year I think it was Apirl or May. Did I mention I am so excited?

And a video ..

I took these photos and shot this video of the Stillwater River early this week. The temperatures have been above freezing and the ice is starting to flow. I know it was cold last week, but I was surprised at how thick this ice was.

Takeoff!

DSC_4627.jpeg

We continue to see a lot of Mallards swimming in the Miami River. I really can’t count how many there were .. it was crazy. I guess we spooked them. It was a massive takeoff event. I zoomed in and caught these 3 males and 1 female as they took off. I love this photo. ~ Rick

Migration Time?

DSC_4713.jpeg

This is a big deal .. the first Red-winged Blackbird of the season. We heard him before either of us could locate his perch.

We have not seen many birds this over the last few days, so this was exciting. The first migrating bird of the season.

The Geese do not seem to mind the cold weather. I guess they were chillig out .. on ice on the Stillwater River. They seem to enjoy the cold. To be honest, it was not as cold as it has been.
