Bug time. The top photo is a male Blue-fronted Dancer, a species of Narrow-winged damselflies.

The second photo is also a male. This is a Eastern Pond Hawk, a species of skimmer.

They both have some amazing eyes. The color is amazing ... nature does blue very well.

Painted Lady

DSC_1706.jpeg

This is a Painted Lady Butterfly. We saw her while on a Butterfly Walk with a naturalist from the Miami County Parks District.

Speaking of Butterfly walks, there is only one more official Butterfly Walk remaining for 2020. It is schedule for October 6 from 2p to 4p at Stillwater Prairie Reserve. Sign up here. We hope to see a few of our friends at this hike.

A Question

DSC_1525.jpeg

It has been over a year since we have seen a Question Mark Butterfly. We saw this one as we were hiking near the Stillwater River. She was on the side of the trail and we almost missed her.

The Question Mark Butteffly looks almost identical to the Comma Butterfly ... other than the comma vs the question mark on its wings. See the links above. Such a unique creature.

A Bad Feather Day

I see this most every September: a Molting Cardinal. Most years I seem to run across males that are molting, but while hiking this week we ran across this female that was clearly in the early stages. A bad feather day?
