The wing colors and design of various butterflies blows me away. Teresa took the top photo, and I captured the bottom two. There is so much color in this photo. It’s just beautiful.

It is. that time of year when the season begins to change The birds are already migrating, and the cooler temperatures are impacting butterflies and other insects. It’s about time for the leaves to display their fall colors. We will be sharing photos of that as it occurs. Stay warm.

Swallowtail!

What a beautiful Black Swallowtail Butterfly.

I think this is a female, but what do you think? Here is a little help:

The black swallowtail has a wingspan of 6.9–8.4 cm, and females are typically larger than males.[10] The upper wing surface is black with two rows of yellow spots – these spots are large and bright in males and smaller and lighter in females. Females have a prominent blue area between these two rows, while males have a much less prominent blue area. (Wikipedia).

Have a great day!

Red-spotted Purple

This is a Red-spotted Purple Butterfly. This one has had better days. It was on the bike trail and I thought it was dead. Teresa touched it, and it flew to this leaf. Aging can be difficult. Take care of your health and be safe my friends.

They are such a beautiful butterfly in their prime.

Buckeye In Buckeye Land

DSC_0014.jpeg
DSC_1765.jpeg

This time of year the Common Buckeye Butterfly show up in Ohio. I have been trying to find one to photograph for a few weeks. I was beginning to think we may not see one.

Early this week, we were out for a walk on the bike trail in Piqua (It is formally called the Linear Park). We were hiking along The Great Miami River when Teresa spotted a butterfly that sure looked like a Buckeye. We did not have our larger cameras. I thought maybe I could capture a photo with my iPhone, but I could not get close enough. We saw so many of them .. it was frustrating that we could not capture a photo. It was a nice 4 mile hike, but no Buckeye photos. 🥵

A few days later, when the weather was good again, we went back to the same spot, this time with the appropriate gear. Teresa took the top photo, and I shot the second one. This is such a beautiful species. Look around ... they are here for a while, but not long. Share your photos!!

This is a Painted Lady Butterfly. We saw her while on a Butterfly Walk with a naturalist from the Miami County Parks District.

Speaking of Butterfly walks, there is only one more official Butterfly Walk remaining for 2020. It is schedule for October 6 from 2p to 4p at Stillwater Prairie Reserve. Sign up here. We hope to see a few of our friends at this hike.
