White Crown

I have seen a couple White-crowned Sparrows recently but only captured this one photo. Sparrows come in some many differnet ‘looks’. The white crown is cool.

A Tree Topper

I watched this Great Blue Heron as it appeared to be landing near where we were hiking. I was surprised when she landed in this small tree. I guess this is the tree topper for next Christmas.

The Other Red Bird

We photographed these two Scarlet Tanager while hiking this past weekend. I have photographed males before, but this was the first time I think I have captured a photo of a female.

Let’s backup a litttle. I shot the 1st and 3rd photo. Teresa took the 2nd photo. They are a beautiful bird.

As for the female … yesterday I shared a photo of a female orchard oriole. I still believe that was correclty identified. That said, the female scarlet tanager looks a lot like the female orchard oriole (to me anyway). The blacks are deeper in the oriole and I see a difference in the beak too. If you disagree, please let me know.

An Orchard Find

This is a first. I saw this beautiful bird while hiking on Sunday. I believe it is a female Orchard Oriole. When I took the photo, I saw the yellow and thought it was a variety of warbler. I am very excited about this photo.

Gotcha!

We saw this pair of Blue Jays recently. I kept waiting for them to land where I could capture a good photo, but they just bounced from tree to tree while making more noise than a hungry baby. In the end, I shot this photo of one of them flying overhead. Gotcha birdy.
