Well, this is different. We were hiking early this week and I almost stepped on the first snake. It was cooler outdoors and he was not moving much. By the time we came to the second snake, it was warmer and he was very active and fast. Good photo Teresa:)

Great Tunes But Missing Feathers

DSC_6014.jpeg

I am fariliy certain that is a Song Sparrow. Another great music maker.

From Wikipedia:

The sparrow species derives its name from its colorful repertoire of songs. Enthusiasts report that one of the songs heard often in suburban locations closely resembles the opening four notes of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. The male uses a fairly complex song to declare ownership of its territory and attract females.

Who knew. As for this particular bird, I am not sure what happed to her tail feathers.

The Details

I shared a photo of a female Red-winged Blackbird a few days ago. Since then, I have been trying to get a better photo of one. This is that photo. I love how much color and detail there is in this shot. It may be the best photo I have ever taken of one of these. She’s smaller than some that I have seen, but wow .. very cool.

A Tan

It is that time of year when we start to see turtles sunning on the rocks.

These two photos were taken on two different days over the past weekend. I guess a friend joined in for the second tanning session. But check out that tan! 😬

1000 Song Types

DSC_6009.jpeg
DSC_6005.jpeg

With many birds, it is often the song that resonates with me. This is a Brown Thrasher. They are a migrating bird, and I usually only see them in the spring. Maybe they are around at other times, but that is when I tend to observe them.

Back to the song. The ‘brown thrasher is noted for having over 1000 song types, and the largest song repertoire of birds” Wikipedia. This one was certainly living up to that. It was so beautiful.

They are a brown bird, but don’t let that name deceive you. They are so very cool looking.

I hope this is not the last one I see this year.
