Duck ... Not

No, this is not a duck. It’s an American Coot. From Wikipedia:

Though commonly mistaken for ducks, American coots are only distantly related to ducks, belonging to a separate order. Unlike the webbed feet of ducks, coots have broad, lobed scales on their lower legs and toes that fold back with each step in order to facilitate walking on dry land.[2] Coots live near water, typically inhabiting wetlands and open water bodies in North America.

I do not recall every photographing one of these before. We saw this one while travleing in Utah earlier this month. Yes, I thought it was a duck!

Thoughtful

Years ago I trained dogs as part of a local dog club. It was common for dog owners to attach a human emotion or trait to their pet. Maybe there is something to it, but most often it was the owner that created someting that was not real.

This American Goldfinch seems to be in deep thought. Perhaps he is considering some deep, universal truths. Maybe not.

One Happy Indigo Bunting

We were heading out for a hike yesterday and I turned to Teresa and said, “I hope we see an Indigo Bunting.”

I was so excited when I saw this in my lens. I love this species. What a beautiful bird.

It was exaclty a year ago that I photographed a Baltimore Oriole at about the same spot while hiking. I really think I have heard them a few times since returning from the west, but this time I was able to find him. They are such a beautiful bird.
