Birds of prey

FullSizeRender.jpg

I have been working hard at improving my skills of photographing wildfire, especially birds of prey. My goal is to photograph one of the eagles that hunt near our home, on the Miami River. I have watched them on three occasions, but I have to know them better, and get much better at setting up without them feeling threatened or spooked. This is there habitat, and I am but a guest.

Yesterday, I went to a memorial service for a friend. I left early so could shoot some photos. I stopped at Garbry Woods Preserve, and was surprised to see this hawk. It was a great opportunity to practice my skills. It worked out great, but I was a little out of focus, and the lighting was not great.

Not far from here, I saw a second hawk. I didn’t do nearly as well, and she flew off before I was able to capture the photo. Practice makes perfect, but I have so much to learn. 😬

Flowering beauty

FullSizeRender.jpg

The Honolulu zoo is located adjacent to Wikiki Beach. The have all the wildlife you would expect from a zoo, and also the most amazing plant life. For a time, you forget where you are and just become totally emerised in the vibrant colors and variety. It’s kind of amazing.

I took several photos of this flowering beauty there. I am not a botanist, so I can’t tell you much about it, but I can tell you this: Simply gorgeous.

Bell Rock, Sedona

FullSizeRender.jpg

I don’t know that the rocks (red sandstone) get more beautiful than in Sedona, AZ. They have some of the coolest shapes, and are named after some common things. For example, Coffee Pot Rock, Chimmeny Rock, and of course, Bell Rock (pictured above). For more, look here

There is a so much Native American history here too. I really need to go back and spend more time there. Someday!

Tranquil, and so alive

“If you truly love Nature, you will find beauty everywhere.” ~ Vincent Van Gogh

FullSizeRender.jpg

I took this before the sunrise at Quail Creek Reservoir in southern Utah about 10 minutes before the sunrise. The slight red glow in the foreground was from our rental car taillights .. I sure thought I had them turn off, but I guess not.

I love the stillness of the lake. If you listened, you could hear nature. The birds, and other wildlife just starting to stir, or perhaps some retiring for the day. In a word: Tranquil.

Photography is wonderful because the photographer can look at the photo and recall memories of a time past. The image brings back the experiences,  feelings and emotions. I can close my eyes after looking at this photo, and go back there. Video can be even more powerful.

I hope I can take you there too, even if its limited, by sharing these scenes with you. The earth is so beautiful. Enjoy it. Photograph it. Share it! Take it in, and absorb the beauty and majesty of nature. If you honor nature, she will give you beauty many times over.

A rocky coast, but warm ...

IMG_0156.JPG

I took this while we were on a tour of Oahu. This rock formation caught my eye. It is very unique. It was windy the day we did this tour, but warm!

Speaking of warm, it’s getting cold again in Ohio and I could not help myself .. I needed a photo from Hawaii to remind me that we don’t have much cold weather left before spring. It will get warm again, soon.
