Birds Of A Feather

The sparrows have been very active this winter. I have always seen a lot of them but it sure seems like their population has been more dense this winter. Teresa captured this photo while we were hiking last week .. this is just a small sample. SO MANY sparrows.

Blue Nesting

There must be an Eastern Bluebird nest or two near this location. I have visited this location several times over the last few weeks and see these birds there most days. The one in the first photo looks very young too.

Facts I did not know: The Eastern Bluebird is the state bird of New York and Missouri.

There are days when I really wish I could read their minds. This tree sparrow sure appeared to be wondering what I was doing. Maybe she just thought I was a little crazy. It is sure a fun photo.

Iridescent Head

Another cool bird that you often see in the winter here in Ohio:

The Common Grackle (Quiscalus quiscula) is a large icterid found in large numbers through much of North America. First described in 1758 by Carl Linnaeus, the common grackle has three subspecies. Adult common grackles have a long and dark bill, pale yellow eyes, and a long tail. Adults often have an iridescent appearance on their head, especially males. Common grackles are found in much of North America east of the Rocky Mountains. (Wikipedia)

I love the unique colors of the head of the grackle. ‘Iridescent’ .. very cool looking.

Junco …

This is a Dark-eyed Junco. Lately I have seen a number of them. Its a sparrow, but different than most sparrows.

The Junco may look different, but they behave like most sparrows.
