A Sun Break

Adjustments.jpeg
Adjustments.jpeg

We finally had a couple of beautiful days. Yes, it was still cold, but when the sun shows up, and the sky is blue, my mind seems to work better.

This is the Stillwater river. In the second photo you can see the thin layer of ice that has survived the sun. The trees are mostly bare, and while some foliage has survived this first blast of arctic air, its clear we have a long winter yet to come.

Torpor? Not me😬

Adjustments.jpeg

This is a Carolina Chickadee. I have photographed this species once before. In fact, it may have been about this time last year. We saw a few of them after the snow fall this week.

You may wonder what they are doing here in this cold weather. They do not migrate, but this is about as far north as they are found.

Adjustments.jpeg

This is an interesting fact is from wikipedia:

Carolina chickadees are able to lower their body temperatures to induce an intentional state of hypothermia called torpor. They do this to conserve energy during extremely cold winters. In extremely cold weather conditions they look for cavities where they can hide in and spend up to fifteen hours at a time in torpor; during this time they are awake but unresponsive; they should not be picked up and handled at this time, as the stress of being held may cause their death.

I need this skill. When we observed them, they were very active and not in torpor.

Cool bird.

Cold Geese

Adjustments.jpeg

I am still seeing geese, even after the cold moved in. I think I would fly south, quickly.

This was actually a couple weeks ago. I’m hoping to get out this week and capture some video. 🤞🏼

Looking Back

Adjustments.jpeg

I love the sky and clouds in this photo. I took this while we were hiking near the Miami River. That was on a much warmer day.

And now, the snow has arrived. I will have some snow photos soon, but I’m not ready. After losing so much fat, I can’t stay warm. We need to move south. For now, I will just look back at photos that help me feel warm.

Fall On The River

Adjustments.jpeg

Teresa took this photo last week. This river was low, but not as dry as what I shared yesterday. It looks so peaceful and as still as a sheet of glass in many spots. I love nature.
