Leaf Decay

public.jpeg

Teresa took this photo of this leaf. I just loved the colors and the contrast. She didn’t use a macro lens to get this shot. Very cool! Did I mention that Fall is coming?

My, What Big Feet You Have

public.jpeg

We spent a few hours yesterday at the Newport Aquarium. Between Teresa and me, we managed to capture a few photos. I plan to put those into a gallery and post it here sometime next week. I thought I would post this turtle photo as a teaser.

Gone Fishing?

public.jpeg

No, we didn’t go fishing in the normal sense. Teresa capture this photo from a bridge over a small creek at Glenn Helen. It seemed like a large fish for such a small creek, but there it was. Great photo.

The Art of Rock Balancing

public.jpeg

This is very cool. I am not sure what artform you call it, but some call it Rock Balancing. From the Wikipedia page:

“Rock balancing can be a performance art, a spectacle, or a devotion, depending upon the interpretation by its audience. Essentially, it involves placing some combination of rock or stone in arrangements which require patience and sensitivity to generate, and which appear to be physically impossible while actually being only highly improbable. The rock balancer may work for free or for pay, as an individual or in a group, and their intents and the audiences' interpretations may vary given the situation or the venue.” Source: Rock balancing

Monarch In The Making …

public.jpeg

Teresa capture this photograph of a monarch caterpillar while we were hiking this week. The caterpillar eats the milkweed, but the butterfly doesn’t. Here is the inside story on this amazing bond:

”You see, the latex-based sap produced by milkweed plants contains toxic compounds called cardenolides. Most other insects, save for a handful of species, can’t digest these toxins; it kills them or they avoid it all together due to its foul taste. But monarch caterpillars actually absorb these toxins as they feed on milkweed leaves, rendering the caterpillars themselves toxic to potential predators. The toxins found in the monarch butterfly host plant actually help protect the caterpillars and adult butterflies from birds and other predators.” (Source: The monarch butterfly host plant: Milkweeds ...)

And now you know ...

We hiked this week .. here is our latest video .. enjoy.
