The Admiral Is In

This is a Red Admiral Butterfly. The colors look a bit off (to me), but it is still so beautiful.

We are seeing a lot of our favorites butterflies now. I am excited that we are planning to participate in a Butterfly Walk next week. It has been a long time since we have done one of these organized hikes. I guess we will ‘mask up’ for this.

Pause For The Butterfly

During a normal spring or summer we would have participated in several organized “butterfly walks” by this time of year. Due to the “lockdown”, they have all been canceled.

We have been watching for butterflies, and have seen a few. That means butterfly photography!!

I captured the top photo in front of our neighbors home this weekend. Teresa shot the bottom photo on the banks of the Stillwater River, near Covington, Ohio. Both photos are of a Pearl Crescent. They are a beautiful butterfly. Learn more about this butterfly here

The End Of Butterfly Season

We took another butterfly hike yesterday. This is the last one of the season. The reality is that with the recent frost, and cooler temperatures, there are not many left. It is the end of butterfly season here in this part of Ohio.

This is a Pieris rapae, small white, or cabbage white butterfly. A very common, small- to medium-sized butterfly that I am sure you have seen in your flower bed or back yard.

The next butterfly hike (or walk) will be next spring. I can’t wait:).

A Little Sulfur

Teresa shot this photo of this Sulfur butterfly. We have seen so many of these this year. This one was is still hanging around as the fall has arrived. They don’t usually land for very long, but he didn’t fly away. Beautiful creature.

The Swallowtail Butterfly

I saw this swallowtail while hiking a few weeks ago. There is some 550 species of swallowtale butterflies. They are a very large butterfly, and at times appear to be a bird flying by. I have often had to do a double-take because I though it was a small bird.

Teresa took the second photo. Another beautiful swallowtail!!!
