A Friend, Fishing

Monday morning I took an early hike along the Mimai River in Piqua. I do a morning hike like this often, but this was a special day.

The experience occured just before I shot the previous photo. As I was walking, out of the corner of my eye, I saw somehing large decend on the river. I quickly turned to my left and this is what I saw.

I was standing farily close to the river, where this Bald Eagle was about 25 yards from me. What a surprise. I expected her to fly away at any time. I had my iPhone with, so I snapped a few photos using the 3x optical zoom. Sadly, that was just not enough. I cropped a couple of them (below), but it really does not really show you how close she was .. and how glorious. What an amazing experience.

Fun To Watch: Difficult to Photograph

I am about 90% certain this is a Northern Harrier. I watched her for a while then tried to get a good photo. Sadly this was the the best photo I captured. I guess she was fun to watch but difficult to photograph.

Lunch Hunt

We were just making our way along this trail near the Stillwater river when we saw this Broad-winged Hawk in a nearby tree. She was just eyeballing us as we walked by. I think she was 35 feet away. As we contined she did finally fly a little away, but it was great to see this beautiful raptor.

Eaglets?

We have been watching this pair for several years now. I am sure we have babies in the nest, but no photos yet. These photos are shot from a football field away .. well, not actually but that far away. I get really excited about birds of prey, especailly eagles.

Just Waiting For Us

We have seen a a hawk on severeral outtings over the last week or two. The first few times he was setting on a park sign near the entrance to Garbry Big Woods Sanctuary. As soon as we slowed down and tried to capture a photo she would take off. I watched as she flew into a nearby tree, only to repeat the process of trying to get a good spot for a photo only to have her fly away again.

On one ocasion, we were driving near the same location and saw a Hawk, likely the same one, in a tree just off the road. I really did not get a good photo, but it is the second photograph above.

Then one day this week we were driving again and saw two beautiful Red-tailed Hawks. A little further from the location of the last few sitings but maybe one of them was the same hawk. That is the top photo. My focus was not perfect, but what a beautiful bird. I can't wait to drive out that way again today and see what awaits us.
