I saw this beautiful woodpecker while I was hiking along the Miami River yesterday. For the past year, I have seen Red-belly, and other woodpeckers in this dead tree that was on this little strip of land in the middle of the river. That tree must have blown down recently. It is gone. What is left? A 20 foot tall fractured stump. Nature happens.
