Big Mouth

This photo did not come out very good but I thought I would share it anyway. This is an American Snout. I can't remmber ever photographing one before and this one did not come out great, but there he was. We were a few inches from the Stillwater River. For a better photo, click the link abovce. As for the name:

Snout butterflies have prominent elongated mouthparts (labial palpi) which, in concert with the antennae, give the appearance of the petiole (stem) of a dead leaf. Snouts often take advantage of this superb camouflage by hanging upside down under a twig, making them nearly invisible. Wings are patterned black-brown with white and orange markings. The forewings have a distinctive squared off, hook-like (falcate) tip. (wikipedia)

Tiger

Teresa and I were hiking near the Stillwater River one day last week when we saw this male Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. I was surprised at how long he stayed on this same Canada Thistle. We shot a lot of photos .. I guess he's a star.

Painted Lady

I can't believe it is this late in the season and I am just capturing my first photo of a Painted Lady Butterfly. This is a beautiful butterfly and while its a good photo, it does not show the beauty of the colors. I still love it.

Imperfect … But So Perfect

This is a female Black Swallowtail. Sometimes nature does not show up in places that allow for a 'perfect' photo. I think that is what makes nature photography great ... the photos of nature are not perfect. Sometimeme you find wildlife where this is less than great lighting, a blades of grass or trees in the way. You see, wildlife does not show up in places where you can get that 'perfect' photo. All that said, viewing nature is so very perfect.

Monarch …

We have not seen very many Monarch butterflies this year. I think this is only the 3rd or 4th all year. This is so concerning. ❤️
