Brood What?

FullSizeRender.jpg

These birds are Brown-headed Cowbirds. The Cowbird is a brood parasite. The female deposited their eggs in the nest of other birds of different species. The lighter colored one on the right is a female. Actually, I think the one right above her is also a female. I guess it’s that time of year, even for the cowbird.

By the way, some of the host birds recognize the ‘odd’ egg, and through them out of the nest.

I Don’t Think He Can See Me

FullSizeRender.jpg

This was a funny one. I saw this Eastern Bluebird fly into this tree. I guess I spooked him. He didn’t move. I really think he thought I didn’t see him:).

Northern Flicker

IMG_0668.JPG

While hiking along the banks of the Miami River this week, I saw a larger bird fly into the tree line. I lost it in the trees. I kept looking, but just could not find her. A few minutes of walking later, we headed back the other direction. As we returned to the spot where I lost this bird, I saw something move. There she was .. A Northern Flicker. She just sit there long enough for me to take this photo.

Defending The Fort

FullSizeRender.jpg

Teresa took this photo yesterday. This Eastern Bluebird is just beautiful. We saw a couple of them, but this one was more intense. We have seen more eastern bluebirds this spring then in the past. That is good!!!

Here is a video of our hiking over two days this week. We visited several spots along the Miami River, and also stopped at Garbry Big Woods. If you love cardinals like I do, this video is for you. They are very active right now.

Fly Catching 🦟

FullSizeRender.jpg

We saw this pair of flycatchers earlier this week. It is the first we have seen this year. I think they are Alder Flycatchers, but I could be wrong. I didn’t get a good photo. It’s not perfectly focused, but you can see them. Good to see them back.
