Signs of peace

Rick Cartwright September 23, 2018

Beautiful sight .. I took this photo at Charleston Falls on Friday. I was surprised to see her, but she was patient with me, so I snapped the picture.

Services for my friend were very nice. There is something about a memorial service that brings some closure, and some peace. Have a good week!

Migration in the dark!

Rick Cartwright September 18, 2018

Yes, this is an Indigo Bunting. Over the past few months I have taken several photos of this species. They are such a beautiful bird. They also sing so beautifully. I have not seen one in a few weeks. I was thinking about this while walking the trail near the river (between mosquito bites).

The Buntings have migrated south now. Oh, you didn’t notice? Well, that is because they migrate at night. They use the pattern of the stars nearest the North Star to navigate. Amazing! (Details from the iBird app).

Mallards ducking

Teresa took the two photos above on Friday. We have seen a lot of water fowl this week. I love the colors on these shots .. I think my edits brought out a little extra blue, but it’s still cool.

I took this photo of these mallards on the same hike. Great colors!

Hungry Pelican

A better view of the pier (also, see the video below)

A better view of the pier (also, see the video below)

Due to the incoming storm, we did not get much time at the beach, but we did manage to capture a few photos. These Brown Pelicans were setting on the remains of the pier. Ever so often, one of them would dive into the water. I could not tell if they were successful, but they seemed content to hunt here.

By the way, the second photo was taken at about 3p on Monday, September 10. This is just before the governor announced the mandatory evacuation of the coast of South Carolina. The evacuation started the next day at noon .. the beach was already a ghost town. We saw a few people, but not many.

The video below is from our trip. It includes other photos and video ... enjoy.

A bird face-off?

Rick Cartwright September 5, 2018

What a sight ... Mr Ugle (Turkey Vulture) and a Great Blue Heron playing games on a bridge. Mr Ugly walked toward the Blue Heron. As he moved closer, the Heron flew over him, landing behind him. Now Mr Ugly turned around and started walking toward her again. This dance continued for some time.

It was so funny, but I am sure more serious for the Great Blue. I suspect she has an injury. She would not just fly away, even when I was nearby.

I talked about it a little and have more photos in Tuesdays vlog ..
