Never forget ...

FullSizeRender.jpg

I took this photo yesterday afternoon: Veterans Day 2017. I am so thankful for the men and women that serve our nation. Freedom is so fragile. I am free to take photos like this, and to write my thoughts and share them openly because of the men and women that have served or currently serve our nation. Let us honor those that ‘put it all on the line’ for freedom. Many paid the ultimate sacrifice. Let us never forget!

The Sea of Galilee, a boat, and those lost at sea

FullSizeRender.jpg

Teresa and I spend a week in Israel in May, 2010. I took this photo while we were visiting the Sea of Galilee. It’s also known as Lake of Gennesaret, or Lake Tiberias. It’s a small freshwater lake (33 miles in circumference). Wikipedia puts it at 141 feet deep .. much deeper than I thought. I clearly had expectations of a larger lake, based on the Bible stories I learned as a young child.

It was hot that day. We had fish for lunch, than then when on our way.  It was a great experience.

The following has nothing to do with the boat in the photo above, the lake, our my trip to Israel. Just call this my tribute to the men of the Edmund Fitzgerald:

On November 10, 1975, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank during a storm in the waters of Lake Superior. Swells of 35 feet, and 100 mph winds were too much for the Fitzgerald, and the entire crew of 29 perished.

For those that know little about it: 12 Doomed Facts About the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald.

Some may remember the Gordon Lightfoot tribute to the tragic loss:

The wind in the wires made a tattle-tale sound.
When the wave broke over the railing.
And every man knew, as the captain did too.
'Twas the witch of November come stealin'.
-Gordon Lightfoot, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" (1976)

Every mountain top is within reach if you just keep climbing. ~Barry Finlay

This photo captures my childhood vision of winter weather. It also reminds me that life is not played out on a flat, open field. Sometimes it feels like the mountain in our path is just too tall to climb. You will never reach the top if you don’t start, and then keep climbing. The mountain calls, “Do it”, so why not start today!

(This photo is from just south-east of Salt Lake City, Utah near Cottonwood Canyon. I took it on December 31, 2015).

Lake Geneva

Lausanne, Switzerland and Lake Geneva

Lausanne, Switzerland and Lake Geneva

Welcome to Lake Geneva! The view to the south, across the lake is the Majestic Alps. The lake is actually split between Switzerland and France. This is actually one of the largest lakes in Western Europe, and it extends much further to the east, and to the south west. Geneva is at the south west tip of the lake.

On the last day of our trip, we spend the evening in Geneva. What an amazing city. My favorite food on earth is pasta, and specifically tortellini. I fell in love with it on a trip to Bologna, Italy where torellini originated. I was so excited when I found it on the menu that evening.

Of course, I was also pleasantly surprised to find an Apple store nearby 😳.

So what is the official language of Switzerland? Most of the people I met spoke French, however in the north most speak German, and some Italian. I didn’t have any problem communicating in English.

A beautiful country, with wonderful people. I will go back!

Bonne journée, mes amis!
