A Buckeye

public.jpeg

This is a Common Buckeye. They stand out because of the cool circles on their wings.

So, they don’t have a long lifespan. In fact, check this out:

Think about that .. only an adult for 6 to 20 days. Wow.

I took this photo on the stony bank of the Stillwater River. They come to this spot fo the water. Even the butterflies need a drink on a warm day.

Your Tail Is So Blue:)

public.jpeg

This is a female Eastern Bluebird. I don’t get photos of the females often, but I saw this one near the road near the entrance to Garbry Big Woods Sanctuary. The bright blue tail feathers are a giveaway. She looks like an older bird. Beautiful sight.

Finally … The Waxwing

public.jpeg

I have been watching for a Cedar Waxwing to show up for the entire summer. As they normally do, there was more than one, and I captured this photo of three of them.

This is about the same place along the Miami River where I Iast saw a few of them a year ago. I was surprised it took so long. They are a very cool looking bird.

Just Before Sunrise …

public.jpeg
public.jpeg

Teresa and I had to take a drive to Columbus (Ohio) yesterday. It was apparent that we were not going to get out for any hiking and photography, so she brougth her camera and we both had our iPhones with us. The 1st photo is just a few mintues before sunrise. The pink and yellow hues were gorgeous.

I took the second photo with my iphone. Amazing what a 60 to 120 second delay looks like just before the sun rises over the horizon.

I was going to edit out the wires, but as you can see, I left them in. :).

The trip was uneventful!

Harvest Bell About to Bloom

public.jpeg

I believe this is a Harvest Bell (Gentiana saponaria). I picked up some facts from the PlantSnap Plant Identification app by PlantSnap, Inc.. I have used this app a few times, and it does a good job of identifying plants. I love the colors of this late blooming flower.

“Berula is a cosmopolitan genus of flowering plant in the carrot family, whose species are known as water parsnip, as are some other plants in Apiaceae such as Sium latifolium and Sium suave. It is easily confused with the highly toxic water hemlock. Water parsnip is a widespread aquatic plant found across Eurasia, Africa, North America, and elsewhere. It is a perennial plant forming stolons at the base where it roots in mud, often underwater. It extends hollow stems and umbels of white flowers. The leaves are fernlike and have several narrow to rounded leaflets.”
